The MAX3232ESE+ is a dual RS-232 transceiver from Analog Devices consisting of two line drivers, two line receivers, and a dual charge-pump circuit with ±15 kV IEC ESD protection on all RS-232 pins. It meets TIA/EIA-232-F and ITU V.28 standards, providing the electrical interface between asynchronous communication controllers and serial-port connectors. The charge pump and four 0.1 µF external capacitors enable operation from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply. The device supports data rates up to 250 kbps with a maximum driver output slew rate of 30 V/µs. It accepts 5V logic inputs with a 3.3V supply and features fail-safe receiver outputs that go high when inputs are open.

The MAX3232ESE+ uses an internal dual charge pump to generate the positive and negative supply voltages required for RS-232 signal levels from a single 3.0-5.5V supply. The first charge pump doubles VCC to create V+ (approximately +5.5V), and the second inverts V+ to create V- (approximately -5.5V). These generated voltages power the driver outputs, which swing between +5.5V and -5.5V to meet the RS-232 specification of ±3V minimum with 5 kOhm load. The receivers convert RS-232 input levels (±3V to ±15V) to TTL/CMOS output levels. A 5 kOhm pulldown resistor on each receiver input ensures the output goes high when the input is open (fail-safe). The ESD protection structures on RS-232 pins use SCR-based clamping to absorb transient energy up to ±15 kV per IEC 61000-4-2 without latchup.
