The ADM3483ARZ is a 3.3V low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver from Analog Devices with one driver and one receiver configured for half-duplex communication. It features ±15 kV HBM ESD protection on bus pins, 1/4 unit load receiver input impedance allowing up to 128 devices on a single bus, and fail-safe receiver design that outputs logic high when the bus is open or shorted. The driver is slew-rate limited for error-free data transmission up to 250 kbps. The device operates from a single 3.3V supply with only 2 mA quiescent current and 1 nA shutdown current. Current limiting and thermal shutdown protect the driver outputs against bus contention and short circuits.

The ADM3483ARZ uses differential signaling for robust communication over twisted-pair cables. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels to differential RS-485 signals (±1.5V minimum differential output) with ±60 mA drive current. The receiver converts differential RS-485 signals (±200 mV threshold) back to single-ended logic levels. Slew-rate limiting on the driver output reduces EMI and reflections for clean signal integrity at 250 kbps. The 1/4 unit load receiver impedance (96 kΩ) reduces bus loading, allowing 128 transceivers on one bus compared to 32 with standard unit loads. The fail-safe receiver biases the output high when the differential input is between -200 mV and +200 mV (open, shorted, or idle bus). Driver and receiver enable pins allow the device to be placed in a low-power state with the driver outputs three-stated.
