The LT1308ACS8#TRPBF from Analog Devices (formerly Linear Technology) is a micropower, fixed-frequency boost DC/DC converter that operates from an input voltage as low as 1V. The device is capable of delivering 5V at 1A from a single Li-Ion cell or 3.3V at 300mA from a single NiCd cell. The current-mode PWM architecture provides fast transient response and low output ripple. At light loads, automatic Burst Mode operation reduces the effective switching frequency, maintaining high efficiency across the 1mA to 1A load range. The internal NPN power switch handles 2A with only 300mV saturation voltage. A low-battery detector with 200mV reference provides battery monitoring capability. The shutdown pin reduces quiescent current to less than 5uA. The CS8 suffix denotes commercial temperature grade (0-70C) in 8-lead SOIC. The #TRPBF suffix indicates tape and reel packaging with lead-free finish. Note: LT1308 is not recommended for new designs; LT1308A/B are recommended replacements.

The LT1308ACS8#TRPBF uses a current-mode boost converter topology. (1) Boost Operation: The internal NPN power switch connects the inductor to ground during the on-time, causing inductor current to ramp up. When the switch turns off, the inductor voltage reverses and the current flows through the external Schottky diode to the output capacitor and load. The output voltage is higher than the input voltage by the ratio VOUT = VIN / (1-D), where D is the duty cycle. (2) Current-Mode Control: The error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage with the 1.22V internal reference. The error amplifier output (VC pin) sets the peak switch current for each cycle. When the peak current is reached, the switch turns off. This provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and fast transient response. (3) Burst Mode: At light loads, the LT1308 automatically enters Burst Mode, where the converter delivers energy in bursts separated by idle periods. This reduces effective switching frequency and eliminates switching losses during idle, maintaining high efficiency at light loads. (4) Low-Battery Detector: The LBI pin is compared with a 200mV internal reference. When LBI drops below 200mV, the LBO open-collector output goes low, indicating a low battery condition.
