The ATA6561-GAQW-N from Microchip is a high-speed CAN FD transceiver providing the physical layer interface between a CAN protocol controller and the differential CAN bus. Fully compliant with ISO 11898-2:2016 and SAE J2284, it supports CAN FD data rates up to 5Mbps. The VIO pin enables direct interfacing with microcontrollers operating at 3V to 5.5V logic levels without level shifters. The device features very low electromagnetic emission and high electromagnetic immunity for reliable communication in noisy automotive environments. In standby mode, current consumption drops to 12uA with remote wake-up capability via CAN bus activity. TXD dominant timeout and undervoltage detection on VCC provide additional fail-safe features. AEC-Q100 qualified, the ATA6561 is available in SOIC-8 package rated for -40 to 150 C.

The ATA6561-GAQW-N operates as a CAN physical layer transceiver with two operating modes. Key subsystems include: (1) Transmitter – converts TTL/CMOS logic levels from the CAN controller (via TXD) to differential bus signals on CANH and CANL; dominant state creates ~2V differential, recessive state both lines at ~2.5V; (2) Receiver – continuously monitors the bus differential voltage and outputs the detected state to RXD; (3) VIO Level Shifter – the VIO pin sets the logic level for TXD/RXD pins, enabling direct connection to 3V or 5V microcontrollers; (4) Mode Control – the STB pin selects between Normal mode (full transceiver operation) and Standby mode (low power with RXD wake-up); (5) Protection – TXD dominant timeout prevents bus lock-up, undervoltage detection on VCC ensures predictable behavior during supply faults.
