The PIC16F1938-I/SS from Microchip Technology is an enhanced mid-range 8-bit PIC microcontroller with integrated LCD segment driver in an SSOP-28 surface mount package. The 14KB Flash, 512 bytes SRAM, and 256 bytes EEPROM provide adequate resources for LCD-based instrument firmware. The LCD controller supports up to 96 segments with configurable duty cycle (static, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4) and bias, directly driving segment-type LCD panels. The CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) enables capacitive touch sensing. The 32 MHz internal oscillator provides precise timing without external components. The 11-channel 10-bit ADC and dual comparators support analog sensor interfaces. The device is a surface-mount equivalent of the PIC16F1936T-I/SS with the same feature set.

The PIC16F1938 operates identically to the PIC16F1936T described previously, using the enhanced mid-range PIC core with 14-bit instruction word. The LCD controller generates multiplexed drive waveforms for segment LCD panels. During each LCD frame, the common lines are sequentially driven with bias voltages while the segment lines are set according to which segments should be visible. The CTMU provides capacitive touch sensing by measuring charge time. The internal 32 MHz oscillator is factory-calibrated and can be post-scaled to lower frequencies for power saving. The MSSP supports SPI and I2C for communication with external peripherals and sensors.
