The AT89C51RD2-RLTUM is a high-performance 80C51-compatible 8-bit microcontroller from Microchip Technology featuring 64 KB of in-system programmable Flash memory and 1792 bytes of extended RAM in a compact 44-pin VQFP package. The device extends the standard 80C52 architecture with a Programmable Counter Array (PCA) for flexible PWM generation and input capture, a hardware watchdog timer, dual data pointers for faster memory operations, and an SPI interface for serial peripheral communication. The X2 speed mode doubles the CPU throughput at a given crystal frequency by reducing each machine cycle from 12 to 6 oscillator periods, enabling up to 60 MHz equivalent performance from a 30 MHz crystal. The Flash memory supports both in-system programming (ISP) and in-application programming (IAP), allowing firmware updates without removing the device from the board.

The AT89C51RD2 executes the industry-standard 80C51 instruction set with an 8-bit CPU core and 256 bytes of internal RAM. In standard mode, each machine cycle requires 12 oscillator periods, while the X2 mode reduces this to 6 periods, effectively doubling throughput. The 64 KB Flash is organized as a unified code/data space and supports byte-level and page-level programming. The ISP feature uses a built-in bootloader that communicates via UART to receive programming commands and data, enabling field firmware updates. The PCA module provides five capture/compare modules, each configurable for 16-bit capture, 16-bit software timer, high-speed output, or 8-bit PWM mode. The SPI interface operates in master or slave mode at up to half the oscillator frequency. Dual DPTR registers allow faster block data moves between memory regions.
