The TLP184(GB from Toshiba is a compact photocoupler consisting of a GaAlAs infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor detector in a miniature 4-pin MFSOP (SSOP-4) package. The device provides 3750Vrms minimum isolation voltage, suitable for reinforced insulation in many industrial applications. The GB rank provides a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 50% to 300% at IF=5mA, accommodating a wide range of LED drive currents. The 80V collector-emitter voltage rating and 50mA collector current support general-purpose switching applications. The 3us typical propagation delay enables moderate-speed digital signal isolation. The compact SSOP-4 package with 2.3mm creepage and clearance is one of the smallest available photocoupler packages, ideal for space-constrained designs.

The TLP184(GB is a phototransistor photocoupler. (1) LED Input: When forward current flows through the internal GaAlAs infrared LED, it emits infrared light at approximately 940nm wavelength. The forward voltage is typically 1.3V at IF=20mA. (2) Optical Coupling: The infrared light passes through the transparent insulating dielectric between the LED and photodetector, providing galvanic isolation. The 3750Vrms isolation rating is achieved through the internal isolation barrier design with 2.3mm minimum creepage. (3) Phototransistor Output: The silicon phototransistor detects the infrared light and generates a base current proportional to the light intensity. The collector current IC = CTR x IF, where CTR (current transfer ratio) is 50-300% for the GB rank. The phototransistor operates as a switch: when the LED is on, the phototransistor saturates; when the LED is off, the phototransistor is in cutoff. (4) Isolation: The dielectric barrier provides electrical isolation between the input (LED) and output (phototransistor) circuits, preventing ground loops and protecting sensitive circuitry from high-voltage transients.
