The TPS72012YZUR from Texas Instruments is a 1.2V fixed-output LDO regulator in an ultra-small 0.64 x 0.64 mm DSBGA (Die-Size BGA) chip-scale package. The 85 mV typical dropout at 300mA enables efficient 1.2V regulation from a 1.5V or 1.8V supply rail. The 45 uA quiescent current is low enough for battery-powered applications while the 68 dB PSRR and 23 uVrms output noise support noise-sensitive RF and analog loads. The enable pin provides logic-controlled on/off switching with less than 1 uA shutdown current. Stability is maintained with just a 0.47 uF ceramic output capacitor. The 1% output voltage accuracy ensures tight regulation for core voltage requirements.

The TPS72012YZUR uses a PMOS pass element in a common-source configuration with the error amplifier driving the gate. The internal bandgap reference generates a precision 0.5V reference that is compared with a divided-down version of the output voltage. The error amplifier adjusts the PMOS gate to maintain regulation. The 85 mV dropout is achieved by using a low-VGS(th) PMOS transistor that can operate with minimal headroom. The 68 dB PSRR at 1kHz comes from the high loop gain at audio frequencies. The 23 uVrms output noise is achieved through careful design of the bandgap reference and error amplifier noise contributions. The DSBGA package directly exposes the die bumps, providing the smallest possible footprint with no package parasitics between the die and PCB. The enable pin controls a bias switch that disconnects all internal circuitry in shutdown, reducing supply current to less than 1 uA.
