The TLC59116IRHBR from Texas Instruments is a 16-channel constant-current LED driver controlled via I2C interface. Each output provides up to 100 mA with current set by an external resistor. The 8-bit PWM controller provides 256 brightness steps per channel for smooth dimming, while the 8-bit dot correction compensates for LED brightness variations across channels. The I2C interface supports Fast-mode Plus at up to 1 MHz, and 14 selectable I2C addresses (via A0-A3 pins) allow multiple devices on a single bus. On-chip diagnostics detect open-load and short-to-GND conditions. The QFN-24 package provides a compact footprint for space-constrained applications. The thermal shutdown protects against excessive junction temperature.

The TLC59116IRHBR uses 16 DMOS transistors as current-sink outputs, each with an independent 8-bit PWM controller and 8-bit dot correction register. An external resistor (REXT) connected to the REXT pin sets the global maximum output current: IOUT(max) = 850 / REXT (for REXT in Ohms, IOUT in mA). The dot correction register scales the current from 0% to 100% of IOUT(max) in 256 steps, compensating for LED brightness bin variations. The PWM register independently controls the duty cycle of each output from 0/256 to 255/256, providing brightness control. The effective output current is IOUT(eff) = IOUT(max) x DotCorrection/255 x PWM/255. The I2C interface writes to control registers, PWM registers, and dot correction registers. Open-load detection works by briefly turning on the output and sensing if the voltage rises above a threshold, indicating no LED connected. Short-to-GND detection monitors if the output voltage stays near ground when the LED should be on.
