The LP2951CDMR2G from onsemi is a 100mA micropower low-dropout voltage regulator available in 5.0V fixed or adjustable output versions. The 75 uA quiescent current and 3 uA shutdown current make it ideal for battery-powered applications where long battery life is critical. The error flag (open-collector) output provides a power-fail warning by pulling LOW when the output drops below approximately 4.7V (for the 5V version), enabling early warning before digital circuits malfunction. The 2.3V to 30V input range covers automotive 12V/24V systems with adequate margin. The 0.03%/V line regulation is among the best in this class. The device is a second-source equivalent of the TI LP2951 with identical functionality and pinout.

The LP2951CDMR2G uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter (LDO) configuration where the emitter is connected to VIN and the collector provides the output. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (tapped from the output through an internal resistor divider for the 5V version, or external resistors for the adjustable version) with a 1.235V bandgap reference. The amplifier drives the PNP base to regulate the output. The 380 mV dropout at 100mA is the VCE(sat) of the PNP pass transistor plus the current-sense resistor voltage drop. The error flag comparator monitors the output voltage through a separate resistor divider and pulls the open-collector ERROR pin LOW when the output falls below approximately 95% of the nominal voltage. This provides an early warning of input voltage dropout or overload conditions. The shutdown pin controls a bias current source that disables the bandgap reference and error amplifier, reducing supply current to 3 uA.
