The MBRS360T3G from onsemi is a 3 A, 60 V Schottky barrier rectifier diode in an SMB surface mount package. The Schottky barrier construction provides a low 0.50 V typical forward voltage drop at 3 A, significantly reducing conduction losses compared to standard silicon rectifiers. The negligible reverse recovery time eliminates switching losses in high-frequency applications. The integrated guard ring enhances ruggedness against voltage transients and provides ESD protection. AEC-Q101 qualification ensures automotive-grade reliability. The 80 A peak surge current rating provides robustness during power-up transients and fault conditions.

The MBRS360T3G uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction formed by the contact between a metal and an N-type silicon semiconductor. Unlike a P-N junction diode, the Schottky junction operates primarily through majority carrier conduction (electrons), eliminating the minority carrier storage that causes reverse recovery time in standard diodes. When forward-biased, electrons cross the barrier from the semiconductor to the metal with a low voltage drop determined by the barrier height. When reverse-biased, the depletion region blocks current flow up to the breakdown voltage. The low forward voltage reduces conduction losses, while the absence of reverse recovery charge eliminates switching losses in high-frequency rectification applications. The guard ring structure around the Schottky junction prevents edge breakdown and improves reliability under voltage stress.
