The MBR0540 from onsemi is a 40V 500mA Schottky barrier rectifier in an ultra-compact SOD-123 surface-mount package. As a member of the MBR05xx Schottky diode family, the 40 suffix denotes a 40V reverse voltage rating. The Schottky barrier junction provides a low forward voltage drop of 0.45V typical at 500mA, reducing conduction losses compared to standard P-N silicon diodes. The 500mA current rating makes this device suitable for low-power rectification, reverse polarity protection, and signal OR-ing in battery-powered and portable electronics. The zero reverse recovery time characteristic of Schottky diodes makes the MBR0540 suitable for high-frequency switching applications up to several MHz without the reverse recovery losses associated with P-N diodes. The tiny SOD-123 package (2.7 x 1.6mm) occupies minimal board space, making it ideal for compact portable device designs where multiple rectifier diodes are needed. The MBR0540 is commonly used in small DC-DC converters, battery-powered instrument protection, and general-purpose low-power rectification where efficiency and size are primary concerns.

The MBR0540 operates as a Schottky barrier rectifier using a metal-semiconductor junction. The low barrier height of the Schottky junction results in a forward voltage drop of approximately 0.45V at rated current, compared to 0.6-0.7V for a comparable P-N silicon diode. As a majority-carrier device, the MBR0540 has essentially zero reverse recovery time, eliminating the reverse recovery charge (QRR) and associated switching losses that limit P-N diode performance at high frequencies. The tradeoff for low VF is higher reverse leakage current, which increases with temperature but is acceptable in most low-voltage applications.
