The CAT24C256WI-GT3 from onsemi is a 256Kbit (32K x 8) I2C serial EEPROM in SOIC-8. It supports 1MHz I2C fast-mode plus, 128-byte page write, and exceptional 1 million cycle endurance with greater than 200-year data retention. The device uses a standard 2-wire I2C interface with up to 4 devices sharing the same bus via A0, A1 address pins. The hardware write protect (WP) pin prevents accidental data modification. The GT3 suffix denotes SOIC-8 with automotive temperature range (-40 to +125C).

The CAT24C256WI-GT3 operates as an I2C serial EEPROM. (1) Communication uses standard I2C protocol with SDA and SCL lines. Each transaction begins with a START condition, followed by a device address byte (1010 + A1A0 + R/W), and then the 15-bit memory address for random access. Up to 4 devices can share the same I2C bus. (2) Read operations support current-address read (sequential), random read (with address set), and sequential read (continuous stream). The 1MHz clock rate supports fast data transfer. (3) Write operations support byte-write and 128-byte page-write modes. During page-write, up to 128 bytes can be written in a single operation with the internal address counter incrementing automatically within the page boundary. The write cycle time is 5ms maximum. The WP pin, when tied to VCC, protects the upper quadrant of memory from writes.
