The KA431AZTA from onsemi is a TL431-equivalent programmable shunt voltage reference in a TO-92 through-hole package. The device provides +/-1% initial accuracy (A grade) with a 2.495V internal bandgap reference programmable to 36V using two external resistors. The TO-92 package is ideal for prototyping, through-hole PCB assembly, and repair/rework applications where surface-mount packages are impractical. The 1-100mA cathode current range covers the full range from micropower biasing to direct optocoupler LED drive in SMPS feedback loops. The KA431 is functionally equivalent to the TL431 with the same pinout and operating principle, making it a direct drop-in replacement. The ZTA suffix denotes the TO-92 package with A-grade accuracy.

The KA431AZTA operates identically to the TL431. (1) Shunt Regulation: The internal bandgap reference generates 2.495V. The error amplifier compares the REF pin voltage with the internal reference and drives the NPN output transistor to sink more or less cathode current. (2) Programmable Output: External resistors R1 and R2 set the output voltage: VOUT = Vref x (1 + R1/R2). (3) Feedback Loop: In SMPS applications, the KA431 monitors the output voltage through a divider and drives an optocoupler LED to signal the primary-side PWM controller.
