The ADM2587EBRWZ from Analog Devices is a fully isolated RS-485/RS-422 transceiver that integrates signal isolation and isolated power in a single package. The integrated isolated DC-DC converter generates the bus-side 5 V supply from the logic-side 3.3 V or 5 V input, eliminating the need for an external isolated power supply. The 2500 V rms galvanic isolation protects the logic side from high-voltage transients on the bus. 15 kV ESD protection on the bus pins provides robust handling immunity. The half-duplex transceiver supports data rates up to 500 kbps with 1/4 unit load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 devices on a single bus.

The ADM2587EBRWZ integrates three functional blocks: an RS-485 transceiver, digital isolators, and an isolated DC-DC converter. The logic side of the transceiver (DI, DE, RE, RO pins) operates from the VCC supply (3.3 V or 5 V). Digital signals crossing the isolation barrier use transformer-coupled isolation technology: logic-level signals are encoded, driven through micro-transformers in the isolation barrier, decoded on the bus side, and fed to the RS-485 driver/receiver. The integrated DC-DC converter uses a push-pull oscillator driving a center-tapped transformer to generate an isolated 5 V supply (VISO) for the bus-side circuitry. The transformer core and winding construction provide the 2500 V rms isolation rating. The RS-485 driver and receiver operate conventionally on the bus side, with the driver converting single-ended logic to differential A/B outputs and the receiver converting differential A/B inputs to single-ended RO output.
