The ADXL362BCCZ-R2 from Analog Devices is an ultra-low-power 3-axis digital MEMS accelerometer designed for always-on motion sensing applications. The device draws only 270 nA in motion-activated wake-up mode, where it continuously monitors for acceleration exceeding a configurable threshold and generates an interrupt to wake the host MCU. In measurement mode at 100 Hz output data rate, the supply current is just 3.6 uA, enabling battery life measured in years. The 12-bit ADC provides 1 mg/LSB resolution at the +/-2g range. Built-in activity/inactivity detection operates autonomously without MCU intervention, and a 512-sample FIFO reduces the need for frequent SPI reads. The SPI interface operates at up to 5 MHz for efficient data transfer.

The ADXL362BCCZ-R2 uses a polysilicon surface-micromachined MEMS sensing element for each axis. The sensing element consists of a proof mass suspended by silicon springs above a fixed electrode plate, forming a differential capacitor. When acceleration is applied along a sensing axis, the proof mass displaces, changing the capacitance between the proof mass and the fixed electrodes. A capacitance-to-voltage converter (C-V) converts this capacitance change to a voltage proportional to acceleration. The voltage is digitized by a 12-bit SAR ADC. The digital filter chain applies anti-aliasing and decimation to achieve the selected output data rate (12.5 Hz to 400 Hz). The activity detection engine continuously compares the acceleration magnitude (or individual axis) against configurable thresholds; when the threshold is exceeded, the activity interrupt fires. The inactivity detection works similarly but triggers when acceleration stays below the threshold for a configurable time. The FIFO buffer stores up to 512 samples, reducing MCU wake-ups and SPI bus traffic. The 270 nA wake-up mode runs only the analog front-end and activity detector, with the digital output and FIFO disabled.
