The TPS7A7001DDAT is a high-performance 2A ultra-low-dropout linear regulator from Texas Instruments, designed for applications requiring very low input voltage and very low dropout. The device operates from input voltages as low as 1.425V and provides an adjustable output from 0.5V to 5V set by an external resistor divider. The dropout voltage is only 200mV typical at 1A and 380mV maximum at 2A, making it ideal for point-of-load regulation where VOUT is very close to VIN. The enable pin reduces shutdown current to 1µA, critical for battery-powered always-on systems. A feed-forward capacitor across the upper feedback resistor can improve transient response and PSRR. The HSOIC-8 PowerPAD package provides 46.4°C/W thermal resistance for efficient heat dissipation at full load.

The TPS7A7001 uses a PNP pass transistor in a low-dropout configuration. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (divided by R1 and R2) with the internal 0.5V bandgap reference. When VFB falls below 0.5V, the error amplifier drives the PNP base harder, increasing the pass transistor current and raising VOUT. The output voltage is set by VOUT = 0.5V × (1 + R1/R2). The ultra-low dropout is achieved because the PNP pass transistor saturates with only a small VCE — unlike NPN LDOs which require at least a VBE plus VCE(sat) of dropout. The enable pin gates the internal bias circuitry; when EN is low, all bias is shut down, reducing current to 1µA. The current limit circuit senses the pass transistor current and limits it to a safe value (typically 3A). Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 160°C junction temperature, turning off the pass transistor until the junction cools by 20°C. A feed-forward capacitor (CFF) across R1 adds a zero to the feedback loop, improving phase margin and transient response.

  • FPGA Core Voltage (1.0V): Generate a 1.0V, 2A core supply for an FPGA from a 1.5V intermediate bus. The 200mV dropout at 1A leaves comfortable headroom. Set VOUT = 0.5V × (1 + R1/R2) with R2 = 10kΩ and R1 = 10kΩ. Add a 10nF feed-forward capacitor across R1 for improved transient response during FPGA logic switching events.
  • Battery-Powered Always-On Rail: Regulate a 3.6V lithium cell down to 3.3V for a wireless MCU. The 1.425V minimum input ensures operation even as the battery discharges to 3.4V. The enable pin connects to the MCU’s power management output, reducing current to 1µA during deep sleep. The 4.7µF ceramic output capacitor fits within the BOM budget.
  • Post-Regulation After DC/DC: Place the TPS7A7001 after a 1.8V switching converter to clean the 1.2V rail for a noise-sensitive ADC. The 200mV dropout consumes only 200mV of headroom from the 1.8V supply, and the 28dB PSRR at 100kHz further attenuates the switching ripple. A 10µF feed-forward capacitor optimizes the PSRR at higher frequencies.
