The IS25WP256D-JLLE from ISSI is a 256Mbit (32MB) SPI NOR Flash memory device operating at 1.8V (1.65V to 1.95V), designed for high-performance code and data storage in embedded and automotive applications. The device supports a comprehensive set of SPI interfaces including Standard SPI, Dual I/O, Quad I/O, QPI (Quad Peripheral Interface), and DTR (Double Transfer Rate) modes, achieving up to 664 Mbps equivalent throughput in QPI DTR mode. The 4-byte addressing mode enables access to the full 256Mbit density, while 3-byte mode provides backward compatibility for legacy controllers. The QPI mode reduces instruction overhead to just 2 clock cycles, significantly improving random access performance for XIP (execute-in-place) applications. The JLLE package designation indicates the 8-contact WSON (6x8mm) package with exposed thermal pad, providing excellent thermal performance in a compact footprint. The device features 4KB, 32KB, and 64KB uniform sector/block erase, program/erase suspend and resume for real-time interrupt handling, and AutoBoot for automatic data output after power-on reset. Security features include a 128-bit unique device ID, 4×256-byte OTP (one-time programmable) security areas, and advanced sector/block protection with power supply lock.

The IS25WP256D-JLLE operates through a serial peripheral interface where the host controller communicates by asserting CS# and clocking commands, addresses, and data via the SI, SO, SCK, and WP#/HOLD# pins (which become bidirectional IO0-IO3 in multi-I/O modes). In Standard SPI mode, commands and addresses are sent serially on SI (IO0) and data is returned on SO (IO1). In Quad I/O mode, all four I/O pins are used for both address and data transfer, quadrupling the effective bandwidth. QPI mode goes further by using 4-bit instruction encoding, reducing the command phase from 8 serial clocks to just 2 quad-clock cycles. DTR (Double Transfer Rate) transfers data on both rising and falling edges of SCK, effectively doubling the data rate per pin. The memory array is organized as uniform 4KB sectors that can also be erased in 32KB or 64KB blocks. Programming loads up to 256 bytes into a page buffer before the internal write state machine applies high-voltage pulses to inject charge into the floating gates. The 4-byte addressing mode extends the address space beyond 128Mbit by using 32-bit addresses, essential for accessing the full 256Mbit density. The AutoBoot feature stores a configuration in non-volatile registers that automatically triggers a read sequence after power-on, enabling the MCU to boot directly from the flash without first issuing read commands.
