The TPS51219RTER from Texas Instruments is a high-performance single synchronous step-down controller with differential voltage feedback in a tiny 3x3mm WQFN-16 package. The device features selectable D-CAP or D-CAP2 control modes via the MODE pin resistor, providing flexibility for applications requiring either fast transient response (D-CAP) or stability with low-ESR ceramic output capacitors (D-CAP2). The differential voltage feedback senses the output voltage directly at the load through dedicated VSNS/GSNS pins, eliminating IR drop errors in high-current PCB traces. The DC compensation feature corrects for the DC offset inherent in D-CAP mode, providing tight output voltage regulation. The conversion input voltage ranges from 3V to 28V, supporting a wide range of bus voltages. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.5V to 2.0V or can be set to 1.05V or 1.0V fixed options via the REFIN pin. Current sensing is implemented through low-side MOSFET RDS(ON) sensing with 4700 ppm/C temperature compensation, or an external current sense resistor for higher accuracy. The device requires an external 5V supply (V5) for the internal circuitry and gate drivers.

The TPS51219RTER uses adaptive on-time control (D-CAP or D-CAP2) to regulate the output voltage. In D-CAP mode, the controller monitors the output voltage ripple through the VSNS/GSNS differential feedback pair. When the output voltage drops below the reference threshold, the controller triggers an on-time pulse whose duration is adaptively calculated from the input and output voltage to maintain the target switching frequency. This architecture provides extremely fast transient response because there is no error amplifier compensation network limiting the control loop bandwidth. In D-CAP2 mode, an internal compensation ramp is added to the feedback signal, allowing stable operation with very low ESR ceramic output capacitors. The DC compensation circuit measures the DC difference between the output voltage and the reference, and adds a correction term to the on-time adjustment, eliminating the DC offset that naturally occurs in ripple-based control. The differential feedback uses dedicated sense lines (VSNS/GSNS) that connect directly at the load point, rejecting common-mode voltage drops in the power delivery path. The low-side RDS(ON) current sensing measures the voltage across the synchronous MOSFET during the off-time, using the 4700 ppm/C temperature coefficient to compensate for RDS(ON) variation with temperature.
