The THVD2450DR from Texas Instruments is a high-speed RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver supporting data rates up to 50 Mbps with ±18 kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection on bus pins. The wide 3.3 V to 5 V supply range provides flexibility in system design. The extended common-mode range of -15 V to +15 V ensures robust communication in noisy industrial environments. The 1/8 unit load receiver input impedance supports up to 256 nodes on a single bus. Hot-plug capability ensures that a device can be connected or disconnected from the bus without disrupting communication.

The THVD2450DR integrates a differential line driver and a differential line receiver with separate enable controls. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic on the DI pin to a differential output on the A and B bus pins. The DE (Driver Enable) pin controls driver output activation. The receiver converts the differential signal on the A and B pins to a single-ended output on the RO pin, enabled by the RE (Receiver Enable, active low) pin. In half-duplex operation, DE and RE are typically tied together. The ±18 kV IEC ESD protection on bus pins uses transient voltage suppression structures that clamp ESD events to safe voltage levels. The extended -15 V to +15 V common-mode range is achieved through a floating receiver design that operates independently of the local ground reference. Hot-plug logic ensures the driver and receiver outputs remain in high-impedance during power-up and power-down transients.
