The T495X476K035ATE200 from KEMET is a 47µF 35V manganese dioxide (MnO2) tantalum capacitor from the T495 series. The T495 is KEMET’s established low-ESR MnO2 tantalum series, widely used in industrial, military, and telecom applications where the proven long-term reliability and 125°C temperature rating of MnO2 tantalum are required. The 35V rating is the highest commonly available voltage for surface-mount tantalum capacitors, making this part suitable for 12V and 24V industrial power rails. The ±10% tolerance (K code) is tighter than the typical ±20% for tantalum capacitors, providing more predictable circuit performance. Note: For new designs, KEMET recommends considering the T520/T530 polymer tantalum series for applications requiring lower ESR and safer failure mode.

The T495X476K035ATE200 operates as a solid tantalum capacitor with MnO2 cathode. The sintered tantalum anode provides the large surface area, the Ta2O5 dielectric is formed by anodization, and the manganese dioxide (MnO2) cathode is deposited by dipping and pyrolysis of manganese nitrate solution. MnO2 is a semiconductor (conductivity ≈ 0.1-1 S/cm) rather than a conductor, which is why the ESR is much higher (200mΩ) than polymer tantalum capacitors (18mΩ for the T520V107M010ATE018). However, MnO2 has the advantage of self-healing: if a localized dielectric breakdown occurs, the MnO2 converts to Mn2O3 at the fault site, increasing local resistance and isolating the defect. The 125°C temperature rating exceeds the 105°C limit of polymer tantalum capacitors, making MnO2 the preferred choice for high-temperature applications. Important: MnO2 tantalum capacitors require voltage derating (typically 50%) in low-impedance circuits to prevent ignition failure.
