The F612 series uses a stacked construction where multiple metallized polyester film layers are pressed together and encapsulated, providing a compact through-hole film capacitor with excellent electrical characteristics. The metallized polyester dielectric offers a good balance of dielectric constant (εr ≈ 3.3), dissipation factor, and cost for general-purpose DC and low-frequency AC applications. The self-healing property of metallized film ensures that any localized dielectric breakdown is cleared by the evaporation of the thin metal layer around the fault, isolating the defect and maintaining capacitor functionality.

The F612JF104K100L operates as a metallized polyester film capacitor using the self-healing mechanism inherent to metallized film construction. The polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, PET) dielectric film is approximately 3-5µm thick, with a thin aluminum or zinc metallization (20-50nm) vacuum-deposited on one surface. When a dielectric defect or overvoltage event causes a localized breakdown, the arc current rapidly heats and evaporates the thin metallization in a small zone around the breakdown point (typically 1-3mm diameter), clearing the short circuit and restoring the capacitor’s insulation. This self-healing process produces a small, brief voltage transient but does not significantly affect the overall capacitance or performance of the capacitor. The stacked construction provides lower inductance (6nH typical) compared to wound film capacitors, making the F612 suitable for higher-frequency applications.
