The STM32L072RBT6 from STMicroelectronics is an ultra-low-power microcontroller from the STM32L0 series, based on the ARM Cortex-M0+ 32-bit RISC core operating at up to 32 MHz. The device incorporates high-speed embedded memories including 128 KB of dual-bank Flash with ECC and Read-While-Write capability, 20 KB of SRAM, and 6 KB of data EEPROM with ECC. A key differentiator is the integrated crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed interface, which eliminates the need for an external crystal for USB operation. The STM32L072RBT6 achieves industry-leading low-power figures: 0.29 µA in Standby mode, 0.43 µA in Stop mode, and just 93 µA/MHz in Run mode. The rich analog peripheral set includes a 12-bit ADC at 1.14 MSPS, two 12-bit DACs, two ultra-low-power comparators, and up to 24 capacitive touch sensing channels.

The STM32L072RBT6 is built around the ARM Cortex-M0+ processor core, which implements the ARMv6-M architecture with a 2-stage pipeline and Thumb instruction set for efficient code density. The memory subsystem uses a modified Harvard architecture with separate instruction and data buses to the Flash and SRAM. The dual-bank Flash allows Read-While-Write operation, enabling firmware updates without halting application execution. The 6 KB true EEPROM with ECC provides reliable non-volatile storage for calibration data and configuration parameters without the wear-leveling complexity of Flash-based EEPROM emulation. The crystal-less USB uses an internal 48 MHz RC oscillator that is automatically calibrated against the USB frame timing (Start-of-Frame packets) to maintain the ±0.25% frequency accuracy required by the USB specification. The ultra-low-power design employs multiple techniques: clock gating for unused peripherals, voltage scaling, and specialized low-power peripherals (LPUART, LPTIM) that can operate in Stop mode while the CPU is sleeping.
