The SN74HC245N from Texas Instruments is an octal bus transceiver with 3-state outputs in a DIP-20 through-hole package. The device provides bidirectional data flow between the A bus (pins A1-A8) and B bus (pins B1-B8), controlled by the DIR (direction) input. When DIR is high, data flows from A to B; when DIR is low, data flows from B to A. The output enable (OE) input, when high, places both A and B outputs in the high-impedance (3-state) condition, effectively isolating the buses. The device operates from 2V to 6V supply voltage with 6mA output drive capability, making it compatible with HC and HCT logic families. The 12ns typical propagation delay at 5V supports moderate-speed bus operations. The DIP-20 package is ideal for prototyping and educational applications where through-hole mounting is preferred.

The SN74HC245N uses CMOS transmission gates for bidirectional bus control. (1) Direction Control: The DIR input controls the data flow direction through internal multiplexing. When DIR is high, the A-side buffers are configured as inputs and the B-side buffers as outputs (A-to-B mode). When DIR is low, the B-side buffers are inputs and the A-side buffers are outputs (B-to-A mode). (2) Output Enable: The active-low OE input controls the 3-state output buffers. When OE is low, the selected direction outputs are enabled. When OE is high, both A and B outputs are in the high-impedance state, disconnecting the device from both buses. (3) Bus Isolation: The 3-state capability allows multiple bus transceivers to share the same bus lines. Only one transceiver should be enabled at a time to avoid bus contention. (4) CMOS Structure: The internal buffers use complementary N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs, providing rail-to-rail output swing and low static power consumption.
