The SN7407DR from Texas Instruments is a hex buffer/driver with open-collector high-voltage outputs based on the standard 7400 TTL family. Each of the six independent non-inverting buffers features an open-collector output capable of sinking up to 30 mA and withstanding voltages up to 30 V. This makes the device an effective interface between low-voltage TTL logic and higher-voltage external circuits such as LEDs, relays, and indicator lamps. The open-collector output configuration supports wired-OR connections where multiple device outputs share a common pull-up resistor to implement distributed logic functions. Input clamp diodes protect against negative voltage excursions from transmission line ringing. Compared to the LS variant (74LS07), the standard TTL version offers slightly faster propagation delay at the cost of higher power consumption. The 14-pin SOIC package is compatible with standard surface-mount assembly processes.

The SN7407DR operates as six independent non-inverting buffer/driver gates with open-collector outputs: (1) The input stage uses standard TTL circuitry with multi-emitter NPN transistors and input clamp diodes. The diodes conduct when input voltages go below ground, clamping negative undershoot and protecting the internal circuitry. Standard TTL input thresholds (2 V high, 0.8 V low) provide compatibility with 5 V logic families. (2) The internal TTL gate stage performs the non-inverting buffer function with a totem-pole driver that controls the output transistor. The 10 ns typical propagation delay provides faster response than LS-TTL variants. (3) The output stage uses an open-collector NPN transistor. When the input is high, the output transistor saturates, pulling the output low with up to 30 mA sink current. When the input is low, the output transistor turns off, leaving the output at high impedance, allowing an external pull-up resistor to raise the output to any voltage up to 30 V. This enables level-shifting and wired-OR logic configurations.
