The MAX3221EIPWR from Texas Instruments is a single-channel RS-232 transceiver optimized for battery-powered and space-constrained applications. The 1-driver/1-receiver configuration provides the minimum RS-232 interface needed for simple serial communication such as debug ports, programming interfaces, and single-device connections. The auto-powerdown plus feature automatically enters a 1 µA standby mode when no valid RS-232 signal is present on the receiver input, dramatically extending battery life in portable devices. The ±15kV ESD protection on the RS-232 pins eliminates the need for external TVS diodes in most applications. The charge pump requires only four 0.1µF capacitors, reducing board space and cost compared to designs requiring larger capacitor values. The IPWR suffix indicates TSSOP-16 tape and reel packaging.

The MAX3221EIPWR uses a dual charge pump to generate the ±5.4V to ±10V voltage levels required by the RS-232 standard from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply. The first charge pump doubles the supply voltage, and the second inverts it, producing the positive and negative supplies for the driver output stage. The slew-rate-limited driver outputs comply with the EIA/TIA-232 specification at data rates up to 250 kbps while minimizing EMI. The auto-powerdown plus circuit monitors the receiver input for valid RS-232 signal levels. If no signal is detected for approximately 30 seconds, the device enters powerdown mode, reducing supply current to 1 µA. A valid RS-232 signal on the receiver or driving the FORCEON pin high wakes the device within 100 µs. The FORCEOFF pin provides manual shutdown control.
