The Richtek RTQ2943GSP-QA is a 42V, 3.5A step-down DC-DC buck converter with AEC-Q100 automotive qualification. It operates from a wide 4V to 42V input range, making it suitable for automotive 12V and 24V bus systems, as well as industrial distributed power architectures. The adjustable output voltage from 0.8V to 42V with 3.5A output current provides flexibility for powering various loads from logic rails to sensor supplies. The programmable switching frequency from 100kHz to 2.5MHz via a single external resistor on the RT/SYNC pin allows designers to optimize efficiency at lower frequencies or minimize inductor size at higher frequencies. Spread-spectrum modulation adds 6% dithering above the switching frequency to reduce peak EMI emissions, simplifying automotive EMC compliance. The -QA suffix confirms AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification for under-hood automotive applications.

The RTQ2943 uses a current-mode control architecture with an internal high-side N-Channel MOSFET. During the on-time, the HS switch connects the input voltage to the output inductor, causing inductor current to ramp up linearly. When the peak current reaches the error amplifier-controlled threshold, the HS switch turns off and the freewheeling (low-side) switch turns on, allowing inductor current to ramp down. The current-mode loop provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting and fast transient response. The RT/SYNC pin programs the switching frequency through an external resistor to ground; alternatively, an external clock signal can synchronize the switching frequency. The FB pin receives the feedback voltage (0.8V reference) from the output voltage divider, and the error amplifier adjusts the peak current setpoint to regulate the output. Spread-spectrum modulation varies the switching frequency by +-6% to spread EMI energy across a wider bandwidth.
