The MC14093BDG from onsemi is a quad 2-input NAND Schmitt trigger, part of the MC14000B CMOS logic family. Each of the four gates combines the 2-input NAND function (Y = Ā·B̄ in negative logic, or Y = A·B in positive AND) with Schmitt-trigger input hysteresis. The hysteresis provides different switching thresholds for rising and falling inputs, preventing oscillation and excessive current consumption with slow or noisy input signals. The wide 3V to 18V supply range suits both 5V logic and industrial 12V/15V systems. The buffered B-series outputs deliver ±3.4mA at 10V with rail-to-rail swing. The device is pin-compatible with the CD4093B from TI and HEF4093B from Nexperia, providing a multi-source solution for Schmitt-trigger NAND gating in noisy environments.

Each of the four NAND Schmitt trigger gates combines a 2-input NAND logic stage with Schmitt-trigger input conditioning. The Schmitt trigger inputs have two thresholds: VP (positive-going) and VN (negative-going), with VP > VN. The hysteresis VH = VP – VN is typically 0.9V at 5V, 2.3V at 10V, and 3.5V at 15V. When both inputs rise above VP, the NAND output goes low. When either input falls below VN, the output returns high. The hysteresis ensures that slowly-changing or noisy input signals do not cause output oscillation. The NAND function combined with Schmitt triggering is particularly useful for gating noisy signals: one input can serve as an enable while the other accepts the signal, with the Schmitt trigger cleaning up both.

  • Gated Switch Debounce: Debounce a mechanical switch while adding a gate enable. Connect the switch through an RC filter to input A, and the enable signal to input B. When the enable is high, the switch state passes through the NAND gate (inverted) with debounced output. When enable is low, the output is forced high regardless of switch state. The Schmitt hysteresis ensures clean switching from the filtered switch signal.
  • Astable Multivibrator: Create an RC oscillator using one NAND gate by tying both inputs together (making it a Schmitt inverter), adding a feedback resistor from output to input, and a capacitor from input to ground. The oscillation frequency is determined by R, C, and the hysteresis thresholds. The NAND function of the remaining three gates can be used for additional logic in the same circuit.
  • Industrial Limit Switch Conditioning: Condition limit switch signals in a 12V or 15V industrial control system. Each gate accepts a switch signal on one input and a zone enable on the other. The Schmitt hysteresis rejects electrical noise from nearby motor drives, while the NAND gating allows the system controller to selectively enable or disable each limit switch input.
