The MC74HC1G04DTT1G from onsemi is a single inverter gate in the 74HC (High-Speed CMOS) family, providing the basic logic inversion function Y = Ā in a tiny TSOP-5 (SOT-23-5) package. The 2.0V to 6.0V supply range covers 3.3V and 5V logic systems, and the 7.5ns typical propagation delay at 5V provides fast switching for clock and signal inversion. The balanced propagation delays (similar tPLH and tPHL) ensure symmetric output transitions. The device consumes only 1µA maximum quiescent current, making it suitable for battery-powered and always-on applications. Input clamp diodes protect against electrostatic discharge. The DTT1G suffix specifies TSOP-5 tape-and-reel packaging rated for -55°C to +125°C.

The MC74HC1G04DTT1G uses a standard CMOS inverter architecture with a PMOS pull-up transistor and an NMOS pull-down transistor. When the input is below the switching threshold (approximately VCC/2), the PMOS is ON and the NMOS is OFF, pulling the output to VCC (logic high). When the input is above the threshold, the NMOS is ON and PMOS is OFF, pulling the output to GND (logic low). The input clamp diodes prevent the input voltage from exceeding VCC + 0.5V or falling below -0.5V, protecting the thin gate oxide from electrostatic discharge. The push-pull output stage provides symmetric source and sink current capability, with rail-to-rail output swing.

  • Active-Low Signal Generation: Convert an active-high enable signal to active-low by passing it through the inverter. For example, an MCU outputs a HIGH-to-enable signal that needs to drive an active-low chip select. The MC74HC1G04 inverts the signal with 7.5ns delay, generating the complement without requiring a full hex inverter IC.
  • Clock Inversion: Generate an inverted clock for a complementary clock scheme. Feed the system clock to the inverter input to produce a 180° phase-shifted clock. The balanced propagation delays ensure the inverted clock edges align with the original clock edges.
