The LT1513CR#TRPBF from Analog Devices is a 500kHz current-mode switching regulator specifically configured as a battery charger using the SEPIC topology. The SEPIC topology uniquely allows the battery voltage to be either higher or lower than the input voltage, making it ideal for charging from variable sources such as automotive supplies (6-25V). The device supports Li-Ion, NiMH, and Lead-Acid battery chemistries with programmable charge voltage and current. The 2A internal power switch eliminates the need for an external MOSFET, and the +/-1% charge voltage accuracy ensures safe Li-Ion charging. The CR suffix denotes DDPAK-7 package, TRPBF indicates tape and reel with lead-free finish.

The LT1513CR#TRPBF operates as a current-mode SEPIC battery charger. (1) The SEPIC topology uses a coupling capacitor (Ccouple) to transfer energy from input to output while maintaining DC isolation between input and output. This allows the output (battery) voltage to be either higher or lower than the input voltage, unlike a buck charger which requires VIN > VBAT. When the switch is on, energy is stored in the inductor and Ccouple charges. When the switch is off, energy is transferred through the diode to the battery. (2) The current-mode control loop senses the switch current and compares it with the error amplifier output to regulate either charge current or charge voltage. For Li-Ion batteries, the charger operates in constant-current mode until the battery reaches the programmed float voltage, then transitions to constant-voltage mode. (3) The charge current is programmed by a resistor from the PROG pin to ground, and the charge voltage is set by an external resistor divider from the battery to the VFB pin. The +/-1% voltage accuracy ensures the battery is charged to the correct float voltage for safety and longevity.
