The adjustable switching frequency (50kHz to 2500kHz) is set by an external resistor on the RT/CLK pin, which also accepts an external clock for synchronization. The Eco-Mode pulse-skipping operation maintains high efficiency at light loads, while the PWRGD output enables power sequencing. The DGQ suffix denotes MSOP-10 with PowerPAD for thermal enhancement.
The TPS54060DGQ operates as a current-mode step-down (buck) DC-DC converter. (1) The high-side N-channel MOSFET connects the input voltage to the LC output filter. When the switch is on, current ramps up through the inductor. When the switch turns off, the inductor current freewheels through the external Schottky catch diode. The output voltage is regulated by adjusting the duty cycle of the switch. (2) The current-mode control loop senses the switch current and compares it with the error amplifier output to determine the switch on-time. This provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplifies loop compensation. The 0.8V reference voltage sets the output voltage via an external resistor divider. (3) In Eco-Mode, the device skips switching pulses at light loads to reduce switching losses. When the inductor current reaches zero, the high-side MOSFET is not turned on again until the output voltage drops below the regulation threshold. This maintains high efficiency at loads below 100mA where switching losses would otherwise dominate.
