The LM5163DDAR from Texas Instruments is a 100V, 0.5A synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with integrated high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs. Operating from a wide 6V to 100V input range, it achieves up to 92% efficiency with ultra-low 10.5uA no-load quiescent current. The device supports both standard buck and Fly-Buck isolated topologies, enabling designers to create isolated output rails using a coupled inductor without optocoupler feedback. The constant on-time (COT) control architecture eliminates loop compensation components and provides excellent load and line transient response.

The LM5163DDAR operates using constant on-time (COT) control architecture. (1) The high-side MOSFET is turned on for a fixed on-time determined by the RON resistor and VIN/VOUT ratio. When the on-time expires, the high-side FET turns off and the low-side synchronous FET turns on. The next switching cycle is initiated when the FB pin drops below the internal reference, maintaining output regulation. (2) The COT control provides nearly constant switching frequency without a clock, and the emulated current mode ensures stability with low-ESR ceramic output capacitors. (3) For isolated Fly-Buck operation, the coupled inductor secondary winding generates an isolated output that tracks the primary output voltage, eliminating the need for optocoupler feedback. (4) Peak current limit (0.75A typical) and valley current limit (0.6A) with foldback protect the device during overload and short-circuit conditions.
