The DRV5015A3QDBZR from Texas Instruments is an automotive-qualified latching Hall effect sensor in a compact SOT-23-3 surface-mount package. The AD version features a 3.5 mT typical operate point (BOP) with a -2.5 mT typical release point (BRP), requiring alternating north and south magnetic poles to toggle the output. This latching behavior is essential for rotary encoding and BLDC motor commutation where the sensor must maintain its output state until the opposite polarity field is detected. The push-pull CMOS output directly interfaces with microcontroller GPIO pins without external pull-up resistors. The device is AEC-Q100 Grade 0 qualified for automotive applications, operating from -40°C to +125°C. The 30 kHz bandwidth supports high-speed motor commutation at up to several thousand RPM. The wide 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply range enables direct connection to 3.3 V or 5 V automotive logic rails.

The DRV5015A3QDBZR uses a planar Hall effect element that generates a voltage proportional to the perpendicular component of the magnetic field. The Hall voltage is amplified and compared against two threshold levels: a positive threshold (BOP = 3.5 mT) and a negative threshold (BRP = -2.5 mT). When the south pole of a magnet approaches and the field exceeds BOP, the output switches high. The output remains high even when the field drops below BOP, due to the latching (bistable) architecture. The output only switches low when the north pole approaches and the field exceeds BRP in the negative direction. This alternating BOP/BRP switching creates the latching behavior essential for detecting multi-pole ring magnets in rotary encoders. The internal band-gap reference provides stable thresholds over temperature, and the chopper-stabilized amplifier minimizes offset drift.
