This hybrid architecture provides the best of both worlds: the ultra-high input impedance and ultra-low input current of MOSFET inputs, combined with the robust output drive capability of bipolar transistors. The device operates from supply voltages of 4V to 36V in either single or dual supply configurations. The input common mode range extends 0.5V below the negative supply rail, making it exceptionally well-suited for single-supply applications. Internally phase compensated for stable unity-gain operation, the CA3140MZ is a direct replacement for the industry-standard 741 op-amp in most applications while offering dramatically improved input characteristics.

The CA3140MZ employs a BiMOS architecture where the input differential pair uses PMOS transistors to achieve extremely high input impedance (1.5TΩ) and minimal input bias current (10pA). The PMOS input stage feeds into a bipolar gain stage that provides high voltage gain and slew rate. The output stage uses bipolar transistors in a class-AB configuration capable of driving loads to within a few volts of either supply rail, with built-in short-circuit protection. The gate-protected MOSFET inputs prevent static discharge damage while the P-channel architecture allows the input common mode range to extend below the negative supply, enabling true single-supply operation. Internal compensation ensures stability in voltage follower configurations without external components.
