The BZX55C10 is a 10V, 500mW Zener voltage regulator diode in a DO-35 glass through-hole package. The device provides a stable 10V Zener breakdown voltage with +/-5% tolerance, making it suitable for voltage regulation, reference, and protection applications in analog circuits. The 45 ohm typical Zener impedance at the test current (IZT = 5mA) ensures reasonably tight voltage regulation over a range of operating currents. The 0.2uA maximum leakage current at 7.5V (below the Zener knee) ensures minimal current draw when the applied voltage is below the regulation point. The DO-35 glass package provides a compact through-hole form factor with a wide -65C to +175C operating temperature range. The BZX55C10 is part of the widely used BZX55C series, which spans Zener voltages from 2.4V to 75V, providing a familiar and readily available component for general-purpose voltage regulation.

The BZX55C10 uses the Zener breakdown mechanism for voltage regulation. (1) Zener Breakdown: When a reverse-biased PN junction is driven into breakdown, the electric field across the depletion region becomes strong enough to cause quantum tunneling of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. This Zener breakdown occurs at the specific voltage determined by the doping levels of the P and N regions. For the BZX55C10, the breakdown voltage is designed to be 10V. (2) Regulation: In the breakdown region, the voltage across the diode remains nearly constant over a wide range of reverse currents. The 45 ohm Zener impedance represents the slope of the V-I curve in the breakdown region. A lower impedance means better regulation – less voltage change for a given current change. (3) Shunt Regulation: When connected in parallel with the load through a series resistor, the Zener diode absorbs current variations to maintain a constant voltage across the load. (4) Temperature Coefficient: At 10V, the Zener diode has a temperature coefficient near zero, as this voltage is near the crossover between true Zener breakdown (negative TC) and avalanche breakdown (positive TC).
