The ATTINY2313-20PU is a high-performance 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller from Microchip Technology that combines 2KB ISP Flash, 128 bytes EEPROM, and 128 bytes SRAM in a through-hole PDIP-20 package ideal for prototyping and hobby projects. The AVR core achieves 20 MIPS throughput at 20 MHz by executing most instructions in a single clock cycle. Communication interfaces include a full-duplex UART with hardware framing and a Universal Serial Interface (USI) that can implement SPI or I2C with minimal software overhead. The device features two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer with 4 PWM channels, one analog comparator, and debugWIRE for on-chip debugging. Operating from 2.7V to 5.5V with 0.1 µA power-down current, it suits battery-powered applications.

The ATTINY2313 uses Microchip’s AVR RISC architecture with a 2-stage pipeline (fetch and execute) and a orthogonal instruction set. Most instructions execute in a single clock cycle because the 16-bit instruction word encodes both the operation and the operands, allowing the ALU to read from and write to all 32 general-purpose registers in one cycle. The Flash program memory is organized as 16-bit words, and the linear address space maps registers, I/O, SRAM, and EEPROM into a unified addressing scheme. The USI (Universal Serial Interface) is a minimal hardware shift register with a 4-bit counter that can implement SPI or I2C by generating clock edges and shift pulses under software control, requiring less silicon area than dedicated peripherals. The UART transmitter shifts data out with automatically generated start and stop bits, while the receiver samples incoming data at mid-bit for noise tolerance. The debugWIRE interface uses a single-wire bidirectional connection on the RESET pin for on-chip debugging, allowing breakpoint setting and register inspection without a JTAG interface.
