The AD694JNZ from Analog Devices is a precision monolithic 4-20mA current loop transmitter that accepts voltage inputs and provides a proportional 4-20mA or 0-20mA output current. The device features selectable input ranges (0-2V or 0-10V) and output ranges (4-20mA or 0-20mA), with on-chip 2V and 10V precision references for sensor excitation. The +/-0.002% nonlinearity and +/-0.02% span error provide exceptional accuracy for industrial process control. The 40MOhm output impedance ensures the loop current is independent of loop resistance. The JNZ suffix denotes 16-pin DIP package with industrial temperature range.

The AD694JNZ operates as a voltage-input 4-20mA current loop transmitter. (1) The input buffer amplifier accepts 0-2V or 0-10V voltage signals (selectable via pin strapping). The buffered voltage is converted to a proportional current by the V/I converter. For the 0-2V input range, a 2V input produces 20mA output; for the 0-10V range, a 10V input produces 20mA output. The 4mA offset for the 4-20mA range is generated internally. (2) The on-chip precision reference provides 2V or 10V outputs for sensor excitation or DAC reference. The 2V reference is used for the 0-2V input range, while the 10V reference is used for the 0-10V input range. The reference accuracy directly affects the transmitter span accuracy. (3) The output stage regulates the loop current through an external pass transistor (or the internal transistor for lower currents). The 40MOhm output impedance ensures the loop current remains constant regardless of loop resistance variations, as long as the loop voltage stays above 4.5V. The 1.5mA quiescent current is added to the signal current, establishing the 4mA live-zero in 4-20mA mode.
