The TPS61040DBVR from Texas Instruments is a high-frequency boost converter dedicated for small to medium LCD bias supply and white LED backlight applications. Operating from 1.8V to 6V input, it generates output voltages up to 28V, making it ideal for dual-cell NiMH/NiCd or single-cell Li-Ion battery powered systems. The 1MHz switching frequency allows the use of small external components, while the 28μA quiescent current and optimized control scheme enable high efficiency over the entire load range.

The TPS61040 uses a current-mode pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) control scheme. When the output voltage drops below the regulation threshold set by the external resistor divider, the internal N-channel MOSFET switch turns on, storing energy in the external inductor. When the switch turns off, the inductor current flows through the external Schottky diode to the output capacitor and load. The device operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) at light loads for high efficiency. The internal soft start gradually increases the switch current limit during startup to prevent excessive inrush current.
