The device integrates the Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS), Physical Medium Attachment (PMA), and Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) sublayers as defined by IEEE 802.3. It supports MII, RMII, and SNI MAC interfaces, providing flexibility in MCU/processor selection. Key features include Auto-MDIX for automatic crossover correction, energy detection mode for power savings, 25 MHz clock output, IEEE 1149.1 JTAG boundary scan, and built-in self-test (BIST). The DP83848CVVX operates as the physical layer interface between the MAC layer and the Ethernet cable. In the transmit path, the MAC sends data via the MII/RMII interface to the PHY, which performs 4B/5B encoding (100 Mbps) or Manchester encoding (10 Mbps), followed by scrambling, MLT-3 encoding, and waveform shaping before driving the signal onto the twisted-pair cable. In the receive path, the adaptive equalizer compensates for cable attenuation, followed by clock recovery, MLT-3 decoding, descrambling, and 4B/5B decoding before passing the data to the MAC. Auto-MDIX detects the cable configuration (straight-through or crossover) and automatically swaps the transmit and receive pairs to ensure correct connectivity. The energy detection mode monitors link activity and reduces power consumption when the link is idle.
