The TPD2EUSB30ADRTR from Texas Instruments is a dual-channel uni-directional ESD protection diode specifically designed for USB 3.0 SuperSpeed (5Gbps) interfaces. In an ultra-compact 1mm x 1mm DRT package, it provides ±8kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge protection and 5A IEC 61000-4-5 surge current capability. The TPD2EUSB30A variant features a low 4.5V DC breakdown voltage that, combined with 0.7pF IO capacitance and 0.6Ω dynamic resistance, provides superior clamping performance for high-speed differential signal pairs while maintaining signal integrity at 5Gbps.

The TPD2EUSB30ADRTR uses TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode technology to protect high-speed USB 3.0 differential signal lines. Under normal operation, the protection diodes are in a high-impedance state, drawing negligible leakage current (0.1μA max). When an ESD or surge event occurs, the TVS diodes rapidly avalanche, clamping the voltage to a safe level. The 4.5V breakdown voltage (TPD2EUSB30A) is selected to be above the USB 3.0 signal swing but low enough to clamp effectively. The 0.7pF capacitance per channel is sufficiently low to maintain signal integrity at 5Gbps USB 3.0 data rates, as the RC time constant remains well below the bit period. The flow-through pin mapping (D+ and D- on adjacent pins with GND) simplifies PCB layout with minimal stub length on the high-speed traces.
