The TFDU4101-TR3 from Vishay Semiconductors is a complete infrared transceiver module designed for IrDA-compliant short-range wireless communication. It supports Serial Infrared (SIR) data rates up to 115.2 kbit/s with a standard IrDA link distance of 1 meter. The module integrates a PIN photodiode for reception, an infrared emitting diode (IRED) for transmission, and a low-power control IC that manages the transmit/receive functions. Operating from 2.4V to 3.6V supply, the device draws less than 1μA in shutdown mode, making it suitable for battery-powered portable devices. The surface-mount package enables automated PCB assembly while meeting all IrDA physical layer specifications.

The TFDU4101-TR3 operates through three integrated subsystems. (1) The transmitter section accepts TTL-level data on the TXD pin and drives the internal IRED emitter at 875nm wavelength. When TXD goes low, the control IC activates the IRED driver, generating a modulated infrared pulse at the IrDA-specified intensity. An external resistor (R1) can be used to limit the IRED current below the IrDA specification maximum. (2) The receiver section uses the PIN photodiode to detect incoming 875nm infrared signals, with the control IC amplifying and shaping the received signal to produce a clean TTL-level output on the RXD pin. (3) The shutdown control (SD pin) disables both transmitter and receiver when pulled high, reducing current consumption to less than 1μA for battery conservation in portable devices.
