The SN65HVD12DR is a 3.3V RS-485 transceiver designed for half-duplex communication over twisted-pair bus cables. Combining a differential driver and a differential receiver, the device operates from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply. The 1/4 unit load input impedance allows up to 128 transceivers to share a single bus. Integrated protection features include ±16kV HBM ESD on bus pins, short-circuit protection to +12V/-7V, and thermal shutdown at 150°C junction temperature.

The SN65HVD12 converts between single-ended logic levels (TXD/RXD) and differential RS-485 bus signals (A/B). The driver uses a push-pull output stage to generate the differential signal, which propagates along the twisted-pair cable to all receivers on the bus. The receiver detects the differential voltage between A and B, outputting a logic high or low on RXD. The DE and /RE pins control driver and receiver enable. When both are disabled, the device enters a low-power idle mode. The failsafe receiver biases the output high when the bus is open or all drivers are off.
