The TLA2024IRUGR from Texas Instruments is a cost-optimized 12-bit delta-sigma ADC in an ultra-small 2×1.5mm X2QFN-10 package, providing the industry’s highest channel density at 0.75mm2 per channel. The RUG suffix denotes the X2QFN-10 package, and R indicates tape and reel. The TLA2024 features 4 single-ended or 2 differential inputs with a flexible input multiplexer, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with 6 input ranges from +/-0.256V to +/-6.144V, and an integrated voltage reference and oscillator. The I2C interface supports standard (100kHz) and fast (400kHz) modes with 3 pin-selectable addresses (ADDR pin), allowing up to 3 devices on a single bus for 12-channel systems. The 150uA active supply current and automatic power-down in single-shot conversion mode make the TLA2024 ideal for battery-powered applications. The PGA ranges allow direct measurement of small signals (thermistors, shunt voltages) without external amplification, while the +/-6.144V range accommodates supply voltage monitoring above the 5.5V maximum VDD. The device is pin-compatible with the ADS1114 for design migration to 16-bit resolution.

The TLA2024IRUGR uses a second-order delta-sigma (Delta-Sigma) modulator followed by a digital decimation filter. The delta-sigma modulator oversamples the input signal at a much higher rate than the output data rate (typically 128x to 256x oversampling), converting the analog input to a 1-bit data stream at the modulator frequency. The digital decimation filter processes this 1-bit stream, removing out-of-band quantization noise and down-sampling to the output data rate (128 to 3300 SPS). The inherent noise shaping of the delta-sigma architecture pushes quantization noise to higher frequencies where it is filtered out, achieving 12-bit effective resolution with a simple analog front-end. The PGA before the modulator amplifies small signals to utilize more of the ADC’s full-scale range, improving signal-to-noise ratio for low-amplitude measurements. The 6 PGA ranges (+/-6.144V, +/-4.096V, +/-2.048V, +/-1.024V, +/-0.512V, +/-0.256V) are implemented by changing the PGA gain, with the internal reference scaled accordingly. The input multiplexer selects which channel(s) connect to the PGA input, configurable for 4 single-ended measurements (each referenced to GND) or 2 differential measurements. In single-shot mode, the device performs one conversion and then powers down, reducing average current consumption proportionally to the conversion rate.
