The RF Solutions RFM98W-433S2R is a high-performance LoRa transceiver module operating in the 433MHz ISM band, based on the Semtech SX1272 chipset. The module employs LoRa (Long Range) Chirp Spread Spectrum modulation technology to achieve exceptional communication range of up to 15km line-of-sight, with outstanding receiver sensitivity of -148dBm. This makes it ideal for applications requiring long-range, low-power wireless connectivity in challenging RF environments. In addition to LoRa modulation, the module supports conventional FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK, and OOK modulation schemes for compatibility with existing systems. The integrated packet engine handles CRC, FEC, and data packing up to 256 bytes, reducing host processor overhead. Communication with the host is via a standard SPI interface, and the module includes an integrated temperature sensor and low-battery indicator.

The RFM98W-433S2R operates as a half-duplex transceiver controlled via SPI by a host microcontroller. In LoRa mode, the SX1272 chipset uses Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) modulation where data symbols are encoded as chirp signals that sweep across the channel bandwidth. The spreading factor (SF7 to SF12) trades data rate for range: higher SF provides better sensitivity at lower data rates. The receiver uses a matched filter to correlate incoming chirps, achieving -148dBm sensitivity at SF12. In FSK mode, the carrier frequency is shifted between mark and space frequencies at data rates up to 250kbps. The 127dB dynamic range RSSI enables co-channel interference detection. Forward Error Correction (CR=4/5 to 4/8) adds redundancy bits to the payload for error correction without retransmission. The transmitter can output up to +20dBm with programmable PA boost and ramp control for spectral compliance.
