The Vishay BCcomponents 35000036 is an AC motor start capacitor from the Series 3500, designed specifically for intermittent duty in AC motor starting applications. The capacitor utilizes a compactly wound construction of etched aluminum foil separated by layers of paper impregnated with a conducting electrolyte. The etching process increases the effective foil surface area, resulting in higher capacitance per unit volume. The entire assembly is housed in a molded plastic container for reliable operation. Eight case sizes are available along with a choice of four terminal types (solder lug, single quick-connect, double quick-connect, and double quick-connect with solder lug). Units may be special ordered with bleeder resistors soldered across the terminals for safe voltage discharge after motor starting. The capacitors comply with EIA Standard EIA-463 and are UL and CSA recognized components with VDE approval.

The Series 3500 motor start capacitor operates as a phase-shifting element in single-phase AC motor starting circuits. During motor startup, the capacitor is connected in series with the auxiliary (start) winding, creating a phase difference between the main and auxiliary winding currents. This phase shift generates a rotating magnetic field that produces the starting torque needed to bring the motor from rest to operating speed. Once the motor reaches approximately 75% of rated speed, a centrifugal switch or potential relay disconnects the start capacitor from the circuit. The capacitor is designed for intermittent duty (typically 3% or less duty cycle), meaning it cannot remain energized continuously. The etched aluminum foil construction with electrolyte-impregnated paper provides the high capacitance values needed for motor starting in a compact form factor, while the power factor remains below 10% to minimize energy losses during the brief starting period.
