The L298N from STMicroelectronics is a high-voltage, high-current dual full-bridge driver IC designed to accept standard TTL logic levels and drive inductive loads such as DC motors, stepper motors, relays, and solenoids. It is one of the most widely used motor driver ICs in hobbyist and educational projects. The device features two enable inputs for independent bridge control, and the lower transistors of each bridge have their emitters connected together for external current sensing via sense resistors.

The L298N contains two independent full H-bridge circuits, each capable of driving a DC motor bidirectionally or a stepper motor coil. Each bridge consists of four power transistors in an H-bridge configuration. By applying appropriate logic levels to the input pins (IN1/IN2 for bridge A, IN3/IN4 for bridge B), the current direction through the load can be reversed, enabling forward/reverse motor control. The enable pins (ENA, ENB) allow PWM speed control when driven with a pulse-width modulated signal. Current sensing is achieved by connecting sense resistors between the sense pins and ground.
