The FT232RQ-REEL from FTDI Chip is a complete USB to serial UART bridge interface in a compact QFN-32 package. It integrates all necessary USB functionality including protocol handling, EEPROM for configuration storage, clock generation, and USB termination resistors, requiring no external components beyond a bypass capacitor. Supporting data rates up to 3MBaud with 256/128-byte TX/RX FIFOs, it provides reliable USB connectivity for embedded systems. The device supports multi-protocol serial communication including RS232, RS422, and RS485 through external transceivers. Note: this device is EOL and being replaced by the FT232RNQ.

The FT232RQ-REEL functions as a bridge between the USB bus and a UART serial port. On the USB side, the internal USB protocol engine handles enumeration, data packet formatting, and all USB 2.0 Full Speed protocol requirements. The integrated EEPROM stores USB descriptors including VID, PID, and serial number. On the UART side, data from the USB host is written to the TX FIFO buffer and transmitted serially at the configured baud rate. Incoming serial data is captured into the RX FIFO and sent to the USB host. The 5 CBUS pins can be configured for various functions including TX/RX LED indicators, power enable, and wake-up signals. The adjustable VCCIO pin sets the IO voltage independently from the USB supply.
