The FT230XS-R from FTDI Chip is a compact USB 2.0 full-speed to UART serial interface bridge that requires no external EEPROM for basic operation. It handles the complete USB protocol in hardware, requiring no USB-specific firmware programming. The device supports UART data rates from 300 baud to 3 Mbaud with 256-byte transmit and receive buffers for smooth data flow. Four configurable CBUS pins can be programmed for various I/O functions including TX/RX LED indicators, wake-up signals, and battery charger detection. The device operates from a 3.3V supply with 1.8V to 3.3V UART I/O voltage support.

The FT230XS-R bridges USB and UART protocols entirely in hardware. On the USB side, the device enumerates as a Virtual COM Port (VCP) when using FTDI’s VCP drivers, or as a D2XX device for direct API access. USB data packets received are decoded and placed into the 256-byte receive buffer for the UART to transmit. Conversely, data received from the UART is placed into the 256-byte transmit buffer and sent as USB packets. The internal clock multiplier generates the precise baud rate from the USB frame timing. The four CBUS pins are configurable through an optional external EEPROM for functions such as TXLED, RXLED, TXDEN, PWREN, SLEEP, and GPIO.
