The MCP4922-E/SL from Microchip Technology is a dual-channel 12-bit voltage output DAC with an SPI interface and external voltage reference pin. It provides high accuracy with INL of +/-2 LSB typical and DNL of +/-0.75 LSB maximum. The device operates from 2.7V to 5.5V with typical current consumption of 350 uA, making it suitable for both portable and industrial applications. The SPI interface supports clock rates up to 20 MHz for fast data loading. AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification makes it suitable for automotive applications. An optional shutdown mode reduces power consumption to 0.1 uA for battery-powered designs.

The MCP4922-E/SL uses a resistor-string DAC architecture with an output buffer amplifier. The 12-bit digital input code selects a tap point on the resistor string, which is buffered to produce the analog output voltage. The output voltage is determined by: VOUT = VREF * (D / 4096) * (2 * GAIN), where D is the 12-bit digital code (0-4095) and GAIN is selectable as 1x or 2x via the SPI command. The external VREF pin allows the output range to be set independently of the supply voltage. The SPI interface loads a 16-bit command word containing channel select, output gain, shutdown control, and 12-bit data. Both DAC channels share the same VREF input.
