The FDMC8878 is an N-channel power MOSFET from onsemi in Power56 (5x6mm) package, rated at 30V VDSS, 30A ID, and 5.8mOhm RDS(on) at VGS=4.5V. The Power56 package is a low-profile SMD with an exposed drain pad, providing excellent thermal performance (20C/W junction-to-PCB) and low parasitic inductance (0.5nH source inductance), critical for high-frequency switching. The logic-level gate (VGS threshold 1-2.2V) allows direct drive from 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers without a gate driver for low-frequency applications. The low gate charge (10nC at VGS=4.5V) enables fast switching: at 1A gate drive current, the rise time is approximately 10ns. The device is optimized for synchronous rectification in DC-DC buck converters: when used as the low-side switch, the 5.8mOhm RDS(on) replaces a Schottky diode, reducing conduction losses by 50-70% in high-current applications. At 20A load, the conduction loss is only 20^2 x 0.0058 = 2.3W. The device includes an integrated Schottky body diode (not standard body diode) for reduced Qrr in synchronous rectification. The -8878 suffix specifies the device variant. Applications include: synchronous buck converter low-side, battery disconnect switches, and motor drive half-bridges.
